Universal Music Group Ditches DRM and Apple

The music industry giant, Universal Music Group (UMG) has taken a bold step to sell all of its top music brands without DRM in a trial set to run from August 21 until early next year.

"Universal Music Group is committed to exploring new ways to expand the availability of our artists' music online, while offering consumers the most choice in how and where they purchase and enjoy our music," Says Doug Morris, UMG's Chairman and CEO.

Apple left out

One notable omission from the list of stores able to sell the 99c DRM free tracks is Apple's iTunes. It appears to be part of the ongoing bitter negotiation between UMG and Steve Jobs regarding pricing, exclusivity and other issues. UMG have recently threatened to cancel iTunes license altogether if an agreement can't be reached.
